If you thought that this new Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, was just the second in the latest trilogy, you might be surprised to hear that things are going to be expanded much further than a trilogy. And if you thought that that expansion might include entrance in to a certain group of Avengers, then you might be really really disappointed. For now.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chief Michael Lynton was quoted saying the following about the future of the franchise: “We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works” involving characters and villains in the series. Sony is “working closely with Marvel and Disney.”
In the article, Deadline reminds us that Sony acquired rights to Spider-Man pre-Disney acquisition of Marvel so Sony directs where Spider-Man’s universe (and all those in it from friends to foes) will head, but Sony “owns merchandising rights to Spider-Man and those related characters, so any further exploitation would have to involve Disney.” In other words, just because Sony is talking to Disney doesn’t mean that they’re talking Avengers tie-in.
We’ll keep you posted on the latest.
