Avatar has debuted at the top of the US box office with $77 million over the weekend. Fox estimated the film’s domestic haul could hit $77.35 million, which would have been a record opening for December. But the final number came in just shy of the $77.2 million debut of Will Smith’s “I Am Legend,” which retained the December record.
The James Cameron sci-fi adventure shattered all competition despite running almost two-and-a-half hours long. The epic feature also broke ground by grossing $220 million worldwide, making it the best global launch ever for a non-sequel.
[Rant]
Everyone is aware of my position on this film and after reading the box office take and news of the ensuing ‘Record’ launch, I’m baffled that we now seem to be making up ‘records’? The best global launch for a non sequel released in December … Really? This makes it’s box office take impressive? So, why didn’t they just say “Best global launch for a movie with re-hashed story-line and corny dialogue ever released on a Friday during a waxing crescent moon”
