When the Earth needs saving, Hoodratz in Space will answer the call! The first issue of Hoodratz in Space, a comicbook series crowdfunded via Kickstarter.com, is hot off the presses and you can be the envy of the ‘verse by winning a special copy of this premiere issue from SciFiMafia.com, zenbitch.org, and Vear Graphics that’s signed by the creator and artist Erik Reeves and writer Jackie Cannon.
Where did the idea for Hoodratz in Space come from? Reeves explained it like this:
It was an idea I had at the time when Destiny’s Child was pretty hot. I was fooling around with the aspect of African American characters and trying to figure out what roles they were being represented in instead of like a side character. I was trying to think ‘What could we do to empower black characters?’ I met Jackie along the way and she was looking for someone to work on her project. I had an idea of what I wanted to do but couldn’t flesh it out without her assistance as far as character interaction and I’m used to drawing one-character books.
So I thought Destiny’s Child in space would be cool because you don’t see too many black heroes in space. Over the years, I took little things that I liked, little quirks… We’re both from Texas so we had to beef up the women with cowboy gear. I randomly picked ‘Hoodratz in Space’ and it stuck. But the interesting thing is that I did a sketch at a convention and placed it on a table and it got so much attention from the fans as they walked by. I actually had a lady that commented, ‘Is this going to be a real comic?’ I’m like ‘It is now!’
It started from that idea and I had Jackie come on board to flesh out the characters more and together we brought it to life.
