We reported in June that both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum had signed on to reprise their roles for Independence Day 2 as confirmed by director Roland Emmerich. We knew, even back then, that Will Smith’s role in the sequel would be small, at best, but now it looks like closer to nil.

Deadline is reporting that their sources are very confident that Will Smith has passed on the project, but don’t get teary eyed right away. Knowing this was a possibility, a script was written with him and a script was written without him, just in case. So, it’s good to know a plan was in place.
