Last year, Roland Emmerich said that he was developing two back-to-back Independence Day sequels, which everyone took with a giant grain of salt. According to IESB, Will Smith has now reportedly signed to star in two Independence Day sequels. Director Roland Emmerich is expected to return to helm both pictures after wrapping his William Shakespeare thriller Anonymous, and they will reportedly shoot both films back-to-back, starting as early as 2011.
The original Independence Day was released in 1996 and earned more than $817 million worldwide.
A unnamed rep for Will Smith has allegedly told Gossip Cop that
talk of Smith being “locked” for “Independence Day 2” and another sequel is “not true at this time.”
Even though the story comes from a reliable source at IESB, there has been no official confirmation (or denial) from 20th Century Fox or Will Smith yet, so this is still considered a rumor – which IESB fully acknowledges in their original report. Because GossipCop doesn’t specify “who” Smith’s representative is, their report of a denial by Smith’s camp is equally just a rumor.
