Who News: Origin Story for the Anniversary, Women of Doctor Who Special Tomorrow and More

As we get closer and closer to the Doctor Who Season 7 premiere, whenever it will be (my understanding from British friends is that the BBC holds off on the announcement to stave off competing programming, and BBC America will therefore not announce, either), and as the 50th anniversary for the show approaches next year, we happily soak up all the Who news we can get.

The latest anniversary celebration news comes from the BBC, who have announced that a special entitled An Adventure in Space and Time will air next year on BBC Two. We are expecting that BBC America will air it as well. It will be a 90-minute special there, so it may be two hours here, and it will tell the story of how the show began in the early 1960s.

“This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original,” said its writer Mark Gatiss. “I’ve wanted to tell this story this for more years than I can remember! To make it happen for Doctor Who‘s 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true.”

Current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat said, “The story of Doctor Who is the story of television – so it’s fitting in the anniversary year that we make our most important journey back in time to see how the TARDIS was launched.”

Sooner than that, however, comes the annual Christmas Special, which BBC America has now been confirmed as the episode in which Richard E. Grant will appear, about whom we told you earlier in the week. It’s further been announced that the episode will be written by showrunner Steven Moffat, who wrote the best episode ever, Blink. Well, it’s my favorite, anyway. The 2012 Christmas special will be the episode in which the Doctor meets his new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

In the meantime, the Doctor Who specials continue on BBC America, with the premiere of The Women of Doctor Who tomorrow night at 9/8c.

“Donna turned out to be one of the best companions!”

So says The Nerdist’s CHLOE DYKSTRA in this exclusive sneak peek at BBC America’s All New Special THE WOMEN OF DOCTOR WHO. Don’t miss the World Premiere *** Saturday Aug 11 at 9/8c *** immediately followed by the World Premiere of THE NERDIST: TRIBUTE TO NERD GIRLS at 10/9c, only on BBC America.

Find out why The Doctor & Donna’s relationship is described as “a buddy cop movie,” and why their comedic chemistry has earned them so many fans.

Behind every great Time Lord, there’s a great woman. Whether they’re busting Daleks or the Doctor’s ego, the women of Doctor Who prove that you don’t need testosterone to save the universe. This All New Special explores the females at the Doctor’s side through all of time and space.
