What the Frak? Eureka Canceled Without a Season Six

Argh. Just a few short days ago we told you the tale of the on-again, off-again Season-Six-But-No-More order for Eureka. With the funky numbering of the seasons, the new episodes we are watching right now are considered part of season 4.5, even though season 4 was a year ago. They are currently shooting season 5, to air next summer.

As you may recall, an entertainment website reported that Syfy had ordered six episodes of a season 6 and that would be it. In response, Syfy issued an official statement that they had indeed ordered a six-episode season 6, but were hoping that wouldn’t be an end to the franchise. Whatever the reason, however, that hope has been for naught.

Here’s the latest official statement, broken by EW:

After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.

Of course we will mourn its loss, but hopefully they haven’t yet broken the last episode of season 5, and will be able to give us a somewhat satisfying, Pushing Daisies-type finale. That is some comfort, as is the thought that hopefully the stars will be able to enjoy this last season without the dread of another in the future. Eureka stars Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield airs Mondays at 8/7c on Syfy.
