Viggo Mortensen To Retire From Acting?

Actor Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, Hidalgo) is considering retiring from acting altogether.  All the travel and frenetic promotion schedule that he’s done has taken its toll on Mortensen’s health.

In an interview with Men’s Journal, Mortensen divulged his decision to retire from acting to regain his health. At the very least, he said that he would reassess his decision after a brief hiatus.  Mortensen’s docket is clear from here on out.  He has no films lined up after the upcoming film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi and Pulitzer winning tale,“The Road”, that will premiere on November 25 (release date was pushed back from previous date of October 16th) which he will still have to do press for I’d imagine.

Viggo Mortensen is one of my favorite actors of all time.  His resume of work is astounding and his range of skill so adaptable that he more than just owns each character he portrays, he IS that character.  I’m sad to hear that he might be retiring from acting, but I hope that it is just that he needs rest and time off to regain the physical energy he requires to continue acting.

viggo aragornDuring his time of filming “Lord of the Rings” I remember hearing a story that Mortensen had accidentally hit a rabbit on the road while driving and pulled over, prepped the rabbit, cooked it, and ate it just as Aragorn would.  I seem to recall that Viggo slept with his sword, Anduril. He even continued the relationship he’s had with each horse he’s worked with on “Lord of the Rings” and “Hildalgo”, having bought them both.  Goodness knows how many languages he speaks now.

So here I pose the question: How could “The Hobbit” be with a replacement for Aragorn?  He had previously stated that he would be interested in being in the sequel to “Eastern Promises” as well.  Viggo, please don’t give up acting!  The world will be poorer for it!
