Update: J.J. Abrams Secret SUPER 8 Trailer Not Connected To Cloverfield

We reported yesterday that a trailer for J.J. Abrams‘ secret project which is reportedly entitled Super 8 would be attached to prints of Iron Man 2 this weekend. NYMag spoke with sources that said the teaser trailer apparently shows “a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame.” and the sources then claimed that the project is actually a prequel to Cloverfield.

NYMag caught up with the director the other night at the Time 100 Gala and this is what Abrams had to say about the claim and their report:

“You have to check [out the trailer],” he told us. “But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.” So what does it have to do with? “I won’t be able to tell you until it’s done,” he said.

When asked if the Super 8 trailer was really sent to theaters in canisters requiring special codes to open, Abrams said:

“That is correct,” Abrams told us. Certainly such conspicuous security measures only invite the kind of scrutiny that can ruin carefully planned surprises, though, right? “I don’t know if it would matter with you guys,” he said, laughing. “I don’t think it matters.” Is there a better way to keep secret monster movies under wraps? “I’m working on it,” he told us before returning to his meal.
