Summary:
Continuum stars Rachel Nichols (Criminal Minds, Alias) as Kiera Cameron, a cop from the future who finds herself trapped in the present day. When a group of fanatical terrorists escapes their planned execution in 2077 by vaulting back in time to 2012, they inadvertently sweep along Kiera, a dedicated City Protective Services officer.

With unexpected assistance from teen tech genius Alec Sadler, played by Erik Knudsen (Jericho, Scream 4), Kiera infiltrates the local police department and forms an uneasy alliance with her new partner, detective Carlos Fonnegra, portrayed by Victor Webster (Castle, Melrose Place). Though desperate to get back to her husband and son, Kiera concentrates on bringing down the terrorists before they change the course of history.

I had heard about this show making a splash in Canada last year and I was thrilled to hear that Syfy had picked it up. I do love futuristic technology and time travel and strong women lead characters, and well, I could go on, but suffice to say, this show doesn’t disappoint.

This pilot episode does a wonderful job of setting the stage, introducing us to a plausible futuristic world that has visible differences both good and bad from the present we know while holding on to basic human relationships that remain timeless. Then the show sweeps us back to the present where the issues of Continuum’s “today” echo much of our own issues. The show really does a great job of taking us in and out of the future and making it feel very realistic.

The actors are fantastic and have great chemistry together and even though they never share a physical scene together, I love the dynamic between Kiera (Rachel Nichols) and Alec (Erik Knudsen) who communicate through implanted technology within Kiera. But that’s not to diminish the scenes scenes she does share with Carlos (Victor Webster). The two of them play off each other well and you can tell that everyone probably gets along well on the set. Also Nichols and Webster’s backgrounds in action projects lends itself well to this show.

Really it’s a great start to the series. There’s action and time travel and I didn’t even get into my favorite parts of the show, the tech. All of the cool things that the future according to Continuum has to offer? That, I’ll leave for you to experience on your own, but when is conceptual future technology not super cool? Never. That’s when.
