People sure love them some transforming robots and explosive action! The third installment of Transformers films, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, is raking in the dough not only as a huge summer blockbuster, but it has now also dominated the box office receipts as the highest grossing film domestically of 2011.

Collider reports that after Transformers 3’s total this weekend of $47 million, the film has earned a cumulative $261 million, beating out The Hangover 2 for highest box office receipts of the year. Two years ago, Transformers 2 was #2 for the year in ticket receipts with $402 million. But I’d place my bets on the final installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 released this week to exceed that of Transformers 3.
