The Magdalena character is a descendant of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. She is a protector of the Catholic Church and has the ability to see into the human heart to give people a choice to redeem their sins.

Writer, Holly Brix hinted at the storyline:

“Without giving too much away, it’s basically about the transference of power from one Magdalena to the other.  It’s gonna kick ass.”

Director, Ryuhei Kitamura added:

“When I read Holly’s treatment, I was blown away.  It’s kick-ass action, but it’s also a story about a girl finding who she is and fighting against her tough destiny. That’s what dragged me and grabbed me.”

magdalena-coverAt the Top Cow Comic-Con panel, these two hinted that the film would focus on the second coming of Jesus Christ.  Brix elaborates:

“There was a line in the comic book about the idea of wanting to hasten the second coming of Christ and whoever could produce Christ could control not only the church, but perhaps the world.”

[zen’s comments]

Having not been familiar with the source material for this movie, it seems to me very reminiscent of a religiously-driven Buffy the Vampire slayer type of movie- strong central female, being trained to fight evil with lots of kicking ass.  All are story points that I can appreciate and enjoy.  I just hope that Jenna Dewan fills the role with more than just her breasts.  And she’d better not ruin Luke Goss’ performance as Kristof, Patience’s trainer/mentor, or else there’s gonna be heck to pay, Ms. Dewan!  (Pictured below is Luke Goss, playing Kristof who can be seen in the bottom half of the Magdalena comic cover above.)
