Tim Burton Will No Longer Direct Maleficent

While he was never confirmed to direct, last year Tim Burton was rumored to be developing a re-take on 1959’s Sleeping Beauty from the villainess Maleficent’s viewpoint. Burton collaborator and Alice In Wonderland screenwriter Linda Woolverton was even hired by Walt Disney Pictures to pen the script.

THR reports that while Burton was only loosely attached to begin with, he is now completely off the project and Disney is currently looking at other directors, including David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). Angelina Jolie is reportedly still interested in the lead role of Disney’s Mistress of all Evil.

Maleficent is currently slated to hit theaters in 2012.
