THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: What About Her Past Is Katherine Running From?

This season, one of the most interesting plotlines of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries is discovering Katherine’s (Nina Dobrev) past. How old is she? What about her past is she running from? Why is Elena (also played by Nina Dobrev) a virtual clone of her? Executive producer, Julie Plec, says that we will find out soon enough in an upcoming episode set in 1490 Bulgaria to air in November.

Executive producer Kevin Williamson talks about Katherine’s origin story and her past with the Petrova clan:

“We go back in time to show a lot about how Katherine (Nina Dobrev) came to become who she was. We answer a lot of questions.”

Hopefully, one of those questions will also be why Elena is Katherine’s doppelganger.

Plec adds that they hope to bring more of Katherine’s back story to light, including a flashback to tell how she ended up in Mystic Falls in the first place:

“There’s a lot to story to tell with [Katherine] as long as she’s still kicking!”

Williamson did also say at NYCC that there will be scenes of the past in Russia and England. In fact, the next four episodes of the show will be “an explosion of information.”

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW!

Here are some interesting tidbits from NYCC Vampire Diaries Panel:

  • There is no rush to push a Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena pairing since Damon is “not yet worthy of Elena’s friendship.”
  • There may be another showdown between Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Damon.
  • Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) “wants in” (as you can see from the promo below) and he might also have a new love interest.
  • Matt (Zach Roerig) may “learn the truth about what’s happening in Mystic Falls.”
  • This season, the production borrowed some talent from True Blood. The show borrowed the wolves used for the HBO series because their own “were a disaster.”
  • Mystic Falls will play a larger part as the show will delve into how the town was scarred by the Civil War and why it’s similar to Sunnydale, California, exploring “what is ‘the hellmouth of it all?”
