The Umbrella Academy Heads To The Big Screen Under Rawson Thurber’s Pen

Superpowers? Check. Dysfunctionality? Check. How about “an adopted dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers?” My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way created The Umbrella Academy comic that’s anything but The Incredibles. Universal Pictures is developing a film adaptation of the 2008 Eisner Award-winning comic published by Dark Horse.

Deadline reported that Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) will be working with Universal to adapt a script for the big screen. Mark Bomback (Total Recall, Live Free or Die Hard) has written the first draft.

Synopsis of the comic:

The Umbrella Academy revolves around an adopted dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers who are brought together by a mentor. As children, they defeat the Eiffel Tower when it’s turned into a laser-spewing structure by a zombie robot. In later installments of the comic, the kids disband but reunite as adults after their mentor is killed.

Unique characters in the comic include Spaceboy whose super-strength is enhanced by his transplanted body of a Martian gorilla, The Rumor who can warp reality just by lying, and Séance who can talk to the dead and has powers of telekinesis but only while barefoot.

No release date has been set yet for The Umbrella Academy film.
