watching tv wide

Happy New Year, Mafiosi! If you are like we are here at SciFi Mafia headquarters, one of the first thoughts in your head as you emerge from the holiday haze is: When will my shows be back?! We wanted to know, too, so we’ve looked into it and have produced the following schedule. Like our Fall TV Schedule, we’ve listed each of Our Kind of Shows by premiere/return date first, then by day of the week.

I’ve made a few predictions about the premiere dates for Doctor Who and True Blood; those discussions can be found below the listings. See Update 2, below.

[Update: Syfy has now announced the premiere date of Defiance as April 15 with a two-hour first episode. According to @TheFutonCritic, Syfy has not yet determined if Defiance‘s regular time, to be be paired with Warehouse 13, will be 9 or 10pm eastern, nor has it decided if Warehouse 13 will premiere the second half of its fourth season on April 15th or start the following week. We’ll update this post when the decision is announced.]

[Update 2 (2/7/13): BBC America has now confirmed that Doctor Who will be airing at 8/7c, followed by Orphan Black at 9/8c, and The Nerdist at 10/9c, all on March 30.]

[Update 3 (2/26/13): Syfy has announced that Warehouse 13 will return for the second half of its 4th season on Monday, April 29 at the new time of 10/9c.]

I love it when I’m right. Educated guess number one = spot on. See Update 2 above the listings for the details:

Now for those educated guesses. First, Doctor Who. BBC America has given us a March 30 at 9/8c premiere for its new original series Orphan Black, and a premiere date for the second half of Doctor Who as “spring 2013”. Presuming the British are, as usual, referring to the seasons correctly, spring doesn’t start until March 20, so likely Doctor Who, if it continues in its usual Supernatural Saturdays slot of Saturdays at 9, may not be back until *gulp* June 1. What a horrible thought.

Here’s educated guess number one, take it for what it’s worth: Doctor Who will premiere on March 30 in a new time slot, likely 8/7c. This way it will usher in BBC America‘s new show Orphan Black. BBC America has been great about airing our Who episodes on the same day they’re aired in the UK. It’s not unusual for the UK to schedule big TV events around holidays like Easter, and this year Easter falls on March 31.

OR

An alternative educated guess: maybe Orphan Black is premiering on March 30 in the Doctor Who slot but will then move to 10/9c the following and all subsequent weeks, to allow Doctor Who to return in its usual slot of 9/8c when it premieres on April 6. This also fits with the “April” buzz we’ve been hearing about the premiere. Either alternative is far superior to a June 1 date for the Doctor. Again, these are just guesses, don’t get the invitations to your Doctor Who mid-season premiere party engraved quite yet.

The last educated guess is on a much easier puzzle, especially because I have the confidence of having got it right last year. I expect that True Blood will premiere on June 9 at 9/8c on HBOGame of Thrones announced its March 31 premiere back at Comic-Con last summer. With another 10 episode season, the Game of Thrones season finale will air on June 2, and as it has done the previous two years, True Blood will likely premiere its new season the following week, June 9. Just a guess, of course, but that’s exactly how it happened last year, and the year before.

There you go, Mafiosi! Happy 2013 TV to you!
