The River May Have Something Else in Common With American Horror Story

Did you watch The River last night? Did you agree with our review? Are you 100% in, or do you have concerns? There have been murmurings of the usual issues that come from big mythology, big level creepy shows: can they keep it up, and do they have an end game?

If you have those concerns, we have a bit of news that might help: The River may be following in the footsteps of its cousin-in-creepiness American Horror Story by having it take place in a different location every season. Oren Peli, creator and showrunner of The River, spoke recently with THR about the creation and evolution of the series.

We were hanging out on a Sunday afternoon as we were developing Paranormal Activity with Michael Perry, the writer of the movie, who happens to have a background in TV and won an Emmy for NYPD Blue. We were talking about other ideas for movies, and someone mentioned the original idea that we had and he just goes bonkers for it. He’s like, ‘This is a great idea, but why waste it on a movie when you can do a TV show where every season they go to a different place.’ So two days later, he has a whole pitch ready with the river and the boat. We call Dreamworks and we run the idea by them and they love it. They want to keep developing it and then we pitch it to Spielberg over the phone. He loves it and on the same call he starts pitching ideas back to us. Some of them actually made it into the pilot… The whole panic room idea was his. He’s like, ‘what if they find this panic room and there’s something knocking inside?’ It was great.

“(W)here every season they go to a different place…” Yes. That. Just like the creepy and beloved American Horror Story. It’s the perfect blend of having an end date without having to cancel a great series. It looks like it’s a possibility, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, pretty cool about Spielberg and the panic room, right?

The River, starring Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, and Leslie Hope, airs Tuesday nights at 9/8c on ABC.
