I really love the musical Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and the filmed version of the play with Bernadette Peters is really fantastic, but it is well overdue for a Hollywood makeover off stage. Disney has apparently been working on making that happen since January 2012.
According to Deadline, Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are both in final talks to join the project with Meryl Streep specifically lined up for the part of the witch. Johnny Depp could be the Baker but I would like it even more if he were the Wolf. Here’s a synopsis if you’re not familiar with the play.
When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel, and Jack. Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. Thus, what begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
We’ll keep you posted on the latest for Disney’s Into the Woods.
