The Minions from DESPICABLE ME Have Inspired a Spinoff

One of the funniest things about Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me has got to be the pill-shaped, diminutive Minions of Groo’s laboratory army. They have taken on a life of their own with an upcoming spinoff film based on The Minions themselves.

According to Deadline, the untitled Minion movie is slated for release sometime in 2014. The spinoff will focus “on the antics of the yellow fellows as they interact with human characters.” Bryan Lynch has a script ready and Pierre Coffin is returning to direct with Kyle Balda (The Lorax) co-directing and Chris Renaud moving into the executive producer role.

This spinoff is not to be confused with Despicable Me 2 that is currently in production. That sequel is slated to hit theaters July 3, 2013. The Minions have been very popular on Facebook and in the digital ‘verse since the 2010 Despicable Me release and even inspired a newly opened 3D theme park ride at Universal Studios Orlando, called Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

Considering that The Minions speak their own language, maybe we need a little insight into them behind the scenes. Check out this little featurette about the Minion language:

Have you created your own Minion? Here’s my little Minion:

I've created a Minion to join Gru's Minion army.

The Minions spinoff is slated to hit theaters in 2014.
