Just yesterday, we brought you the news that that Stanley Tucci (Captain America: The First Avenger, Jack the Giant Killer) had joined the cast of the Gary Ross (Pleasantville) directed big-screen adaptation of the first novel in Suzanne Collins’ best selling trilogy, The Hunger Games as Caesar Flickerman, the smooth-talking host of the Hunger Games.
Now, THR reports that Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, 2012) has signed on to portray Haymitch Abernathy. In the book, Abernathy was the winner of the 50th Hunger Games, which took place more than two decades before the games in the novel, and he is now the alcoholic mentor to District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).
In addition to Harrelson’s casting, Lionsgate has cast Jeremy Marinas and Dakota Hood as the yet-to-be named tributes from district 10, leaving the tributes from district 2 the only tribute roles remaining to be cast.
The Hunger Games is slated to hit theaters on March 23rd, 2012.
