Last week, we brought you news of Sony and Filmdistrict teaming up with Ghost House Pictures to distribute The Evil Dead remake and of the possibility of VFX master Greg Nicotero’s involvement with the film. While casting is underway, we’ve finally got some details on the actual story that director Fede Alvarez wrote with Rodo Sayagues that Diablo Cody contributed character and dialogue revisions to that Cody described as “unbelievably violent.”
This remake has been met with concern and excitement by Evil Dead fans. Even though Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert are behind this remake, fans are still wary. The latest on the story comes from Moviehole with the news that this film will be a serious horror film similar in tone to The Shining:
“The good news is, I guess, this sounds like a good horror movie. Is it the Evil Dead we know and love though? With the quick quips, camp humour and cool-as-ice hero? Nope. Not at all. In fact, from what our contact tells us it’s much more akin to The Shining. And after hearing the story and getting a good grasp on the tone they’re going for here, I’m convinced it’ll be a no-laugh zone this one.”
The story follows a group of friends that retreat to a cabin in the woods for a drug intervention of one of their own. Here’s a breakdown of the character details from intel from Bloody Disgusting:
Mia – Having lost her mother recently, she fell into a pattern of addiction and is trying to come clean.
David – Brother of Mia. Mechanic.
Natalie – Engaged to David.
Eric –The dumbass that reads from the Book of the Dead.
Olivia – Best friend of Mia. Nurse.
Of course, Mia is the first to succumb to the demon influence, recovering from a recent overdose where she technically died and was brought back. She begins to see things like “a bloody face with a cracked skull sticking out” in the mirror and do things like ”vomiting blood and bile at her friends” and “getting trigger-happy with a rifle” that make her brother and friends think that she has lost her marbles. The demon wants each one of these kids’ souls and uses Mia to get them in gruesome and horrible ways.
Synopsis:
“Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”
The Evil Dead begins shooting in New Zealand in March of 2012.
