The Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell Explains Why There Is No Ash Character In the Remake

Back in September, we brought you news straight from Bruce Campbell about his iconic character of Ash in the new The Evil Dead remake. Campbell has teamed back up with director Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert for this project. Campbell indicated that the remake is a re-telling of the tale and would be without an Ash character.

In an interview with TV Guide, Campbell explained the reasoning behind their decision to be Ash-less in The Evil Dead remake:

“We are going to remake it, the original. And people are a little iffy about that. We wanted to remake a movie that would have better effects. We’re better at telling stories now, and so we found a young filmmaker, Fede Alvarez, who is from Uruguay who is going to direct the thing.

There’s no Ash character in it. That pisses people off, because like ‘How can you have Evil Dead without Ash?’ We didn’t want to have the direct comparison. You put Ash and all those characters in it, ‘Oh, that guy was okay.’ I wouldn’t want to put an actor in that position.”

Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack) is directing with a script by Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody.

Synopsis:

“Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”

The Evil Dead begins shooting in early 2012.
