The Dark Knight Rises: Christopher Nolan Bids Farewell to Pittsburgh

Throughout the past couple of months, we’ve brought you tons of behind the scenes images and video from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania set of director Christopher Nolan‘s forthcoming trip to Gotham with The Dark Knight Rises. We have seen Tom Hardy in his Bane gear, Anne Hathaway seemingly stealing the Batpod in her skin-tight Catwoman costume, and Christian Bale piloting what appeared to be the Nolan Batverse’s (very Tumbler’esque) version of the Batwing throughout the city’s streets.

While most movie fans would totally dig having a movie filmed outside their office (myself included), it can put a tremendous strain on traffic and the like in a busy city like Pittsburgh. Not to mention the strain it puts on a movie crew to shoot during daylight hours, having to shut down streets and having to be aware of so many factors outside the production that they don’t normally deal with on a sound stage.

That being said, Nolan apparently understands the pressures it puts on a city and his gratitude towards the Steel City is currently on display in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Thanks to the great folks over at Batman-News, who have done a fantastic job of covering the production of The Dark Knight Rises, you can check out the full page ad that Nolan took out to express his gratitude to the city!

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, on Friday, prior to wrapping the shoot on Sunday, Nolan made a visit to the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s museum of comic and cartoon art.

“The museum was celebrating the close of its exhibition, “Superheroes: Icons and Origins,” with a visit from Jerry Robinson. The artist first put The Joker on paper in 1940 and helped create the Dark Knight’s acrobatic sidekick, Robin.

In a gallery filled with original comic art, it was a meeting of the minds and masters.”
