We previously reported that Joss Whedon (Firefly, Serenity) is in final talks to direct the film adaptation of Marvel’s superhero team-up movie, THE AVENGERS. Now, Variety claims that Whedon is not just going to direct THE AVENGERS, he’s also reworking a new draft of Zak Penn‘s screenplay.

Penn and Whedon are both accomplished writers in the comic book/comic book film world. Penn has written a number of Marvel movies, including The Incredible Hulk, and Whedon has written for Marvel comic books, including Astonishing X-Men.

The Avengers is slated to hit theaters on May 4, 2012.
