TERMINATOR Franchise Up For Sale Again

Terminator Derek Anderson Victor Kubicek HalcyonThe current owners of the “Terminator” franchise are in bankruptcy and are now looking for a new buyer for the franchise.  Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek who produced “Terminator Salvation” are seeking to sell the franchise either in part or outright.

Anderson and Kubicek’s Halcyon Holding Group bought the franchise in 2007 for $25 mil. The company is working with FTI Captial Advisors to “evaluate strategic alternatives” which undoubtedly means the sale of the “Terminator” franchise as it is Halcyon’s only current asset of value.

Kevin Shultz, senior managing director at FTI states:

“We’re going to be contacting a variety of studios and independent companies.  We think the values are considerably in excess of the purchase price.”

The “Terminator” franchise has changed hands more than any other major film series out of Hollywood.  Take a look at the “Terminator” ownership timeline:

1984– Movie “The Terminator” released.  Production company Hemdale Film Corp. owns 50% interest; Director James Cameron sells his half to his producing partner and future wife, Gale Anne Hurd for a buck.

1990– Carolco Pictures buys the Hemdale Film Corp’s portion for $10 mil and produce “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991.

1997– Carolco goes belly up and producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna go on to start new company, C2 Pictures and buy back their former stake of “Terminator” for $8 mil. and Gale Anne Hurd’s portion for $7 mil.

2007– “Terminator” is sold to novice producers, Anderson and Kubicek

Anderson claims that the franchise is now worth more than $60 mil, but FTI will assess the value of it on their own which will need to include a projection on cash flow from future DVD sales of “Salvation” and future sequels to the “Terminator” franchise.

As Jason had reported earlier, Anderson and Kubicek have more than just bankruptcy issues on their hands.  Two “Salvation” producers are still suing them for alleged financial wrongdoing.
