Earlier this month, current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat had tweeted that any Doctor Who movie made by the BBC would star the current Doctor and “NOT be a Hollywood reboot.”
Moffat is steadfast in his position and when he was asked about the Who movie on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Richard Bacon Show, Moffat gave no ground. Moffat denounced Harry Potter director David Yates’ early take to a Doctor Who movie, where the movie would not follow the television show, calling such a departure “a heathen thing to do” and a “heresy:”
“David (Yates) was talking a little out of turn, there; a very, very brilliant director but no the film as described by him, of course we’re not going to do that—a film that contradicts the television series, it would be a heathen thing to do … I would be ‘beheaded’ to do such a thing!
It would be wonderful to do a Doctor Who film, but when and if we did—and hopefully we will be doing it—it will be very much an offshoot of the television series and we’ll be part of it, and it will star the television Doctor, of course—anything else would be heresy!”
A complete reboot of Doctor Who for a standalone movie would indeed be heresy! We’ll keep you posted as this develops. Of course, the big news from Moffat last week was the spoilery announcement last week about a change in cast for next year. I’ll let you click on the link for that spoiler if you want to know what that announcement was!
