Stephen King’s Alternative To EUREKA: A Preview Of HAVEN

SyFy’s new series “Haven” brings another Stephen King story to television. “Haven” is based on the Stephen King novella “The Colorado Kid”. In the series, Haven is described as a place “where people with supernatural abilities have migrated for generations because it mutes their powers, allowing them to lead normal lives.”

Haven” stars Emily Rose (“Damages”) as Audrey Parker, an FBI Agent who uncovers the secret of the small town of Haven, Maine in her investigation of the murder of a local ex-con.

SyFy’s EVP of Original Programming, Mark Stern, compares this new show to another SyFy original series “Eureka”:

“It felt like a good companion to Eureka… but from a different perspective. Haven is like the Stephen King alternative to [Eureka], not the dark, grim Steven King version of that but the ‘Green Mile‘ version of that with people beginning to experience strange supernatural abilities but not being aware of it.”

The show will be a combination of a procedural with serialized components. Actress Emily Rose explains:

“There will be weekly stories, but [also] a deeper arc of Audrey’s backstory.”

“I’m really excited to be playing this part. It’s so rare to find a really well-written female lead… Audrey is an orphan and is literally trying to [solve] this mystery of her family. What’s so great about playing a female lead, especially in law enforcement, is that these women really do exist and they’re fascinating.”

The show will be more “towards the extraordinary rather than the disgusting or the horror–though there will be some horror in it,” according to Stern.

Havenhas the blessing of King even though he is not involved in the day-to-day of the series. The show’s co-writer, Sam Ernst, tweeted that he and writer Jim Dunn basically absorbed the whole book and then added a supernatural storyline and back story for the characters.”

Adam Kane, who has worked on “Heroes”, directed the pilot episode. “Haven” also stars Lucas Bryan, Eric Balfour, Richard Donat, and John Dunsworth.

“Haven” premieres on Friday, July 9th on SyFy at 10/9C.
