Spider-Man: Denis Leary To Play Gwen Stacy’s Father

Not too long ago, we brought you the news that Martin Sheen was cast as Uncle Ben, Sally Field was in early talks to portray Aunt May, and Zooey Deschanel (Your Highness) was rumored to be wanted by director Marc Webb himself to play Betty Brant in the as yet Untitled Spider-Man Reboot.

Now, THR reports that Denis Leary (Rescue Me, Ice Age: Continental Drift) is currently in talks to appear in the film as police captain George Stacy, the father of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).

In the classic comics, the character strongly approves of his daughter’s relationship with Peter Parker (Spider-Man), and is also a strong supporter of Spider-Man. In the classic The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1) #90 (Nov. 1970), During a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, Captain Stacy is crushed by falling debris while saving a child. As he dies, he reveals to Parker that he had known his identity for some time, and asks Peter to take care of Gwen.

In the Ultimate Spider-Man universe, this version of George is instead known as Captain John Stacy and is much younger than his mainstream counterpart. He has brown hair instead of white, is also athletic and carries his own gun. The Ulitimate version is not a fan of Spider-Man, but admires his vigilante work. He has trouble handling his teenage daughter, Gwen, and his marriage problems.

The Untitled Spider-Man Reboot is slated to hit theaters on July 3rd, 2012

[The Shakedown]

The Ultimate version of Stacy sounds like a perfect fit for Leary, and being a huge fan of him, and his FX Network show Rescue Me, it would be great to see him in this role. If you either can’t or don’t watch that show, I can assure you that Leary’s acting chops have improved by leaps and bounds over the years.
