Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete.” The deal was announced Monday by Sony and Hyde Park Entertainment. “Machete” is the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse.”
The film is in production in Austin, Texas, with a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez and Rose McGowan.
The story centers around former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis. Sony also worked with Rodriguez on the so-called Mexico Trilogy — “El Mariachi,” “Desperado” and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.”
When he first teased his Grindhouse spin-off movie ‘Machete’, Rodriguez seemed to think it would never be anything other than a direct-to-DVD feature – however, Machete has been filming in Austin with a star-studded cast, and now it has worldwide theatrical distribution.
