Snow White and the Huntsman: Universal Couldn’t Pay Mortensen Enough to Work With Stewart

Back in January, we brought you the news that Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) and Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) were in talks with Universal Pictures to star in the Rupert Sanders (The Low Dweller) directed,  Snow White and the Huntsman.

Kristen Stewart was then confirmed for the female lead role, back at the beginning of this month, but Mortensen was still negotiating with the studio. Now, Variety reports that Viggo Mortensen has ended negotiations for the role of the huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman and has moved on from the project. Insiders claim that the actor asked for $8 million as well as gross participation.

Back in February, we brought you a report about Viggo Mortensen being at the top of Warner Bros. list to portray the villainous ‘General Zod’ in the hotly anticipated Superman reboot being directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises). Exiting Snow White and the Huntsman, which was slated to go into production during the same time-frame as Superman: Man of Steel does leave Mortensen available to join the cast of Snyder’s reboot.

Snow White and the Huntsman offers a different take on the classic fairy tale, having Snow White (Kristen Stewart) banished by the evil queen (Charlize Theron), and forming a bond with the man who was sent to kill her, The Huntsman. The Huntsman instead becomes her mentor, teaching her how to fight and defend herself.

Snow White and the Huntsman is slated to hit theaters on December 21st, 2012.

Superman (aka Superman: Man of Steel) is slated to hit theaters in 2012.
