SMALLVILLE: Love On The Battlefield, Season Finale SPOILERS

Smallville” show runner Brian Peterson teases fans that the season finale will be see a development of intimate feelings between certain characters and a finale-worthy “superfight”. Peterson calls the ninth season finale “iconic”. Now, if that doesn’t set up high hopes for this season’s closer, I don’t know what can!

The romance Peterson mentioned involves Oliver (Justin Hartley) and Chloe (Allison Mack). He talks about the evolution of their relationship:

“They started out as no strings attached, just fun companions because of all the baggage they each had from past loves, but in the finale that relationship will be pushed to the next level.”

The relationship between Clark (Tom Welling) and Lois (Erica Durance) and Lois and the Blur will also be a point of focus for the season finale. Peterson talks about this love triangle:

“What I can say is that this year we’ve really explored the tough duality of Lois having one relationship with this hero, the soldier of duty relationship, and one romantic love relationship with Clark, and so that just drives all the way through episodes 19, 21 and the finale. Everything that’s been going on with that love triangle converges.”

“It’s not just Clark and Lois, it’s really the relationship between the Blur and Lois, and Clark and Lois that drives all the way up into the last few minutes of the finale. It’s one of the bigger cliff-hangers at the end of this season, what happens with them.”

Not to be outshone is the journey of Clark Kent (Tom Welling) the star of “Smallville”. Peterson addresses the expectation of a “superfight” and Clark’s story arc:

“Everybody has come to expect some huge, gigantic, massive superfight because we do that a lot in our finales, or we once did, and this year will still meet everyone’s expectations. We have some amazingly iconic moments – moments catch close to all of that much bigger mythos that has become Superman – probably more than any other episode in the series. But it is also much more about Clark’s character and his growth and some character reveals than just all-out fighting. It’s a really great way to go out of the season on some amazing character cliff-hangers.”

“This season has been about Clark exploring an identity as Clark Kent and a very separate identity as this cold, saving Kryptonian. That will propel us into the next season, where he has evolved out of that. He’s been in his Kryptonian cocoon and he will evolve out of that into the hero we all recognize. For everybody who goes out to be a hero for good, you have to struggle with the darkness before you really can come out the other side of it. Really the finale is Clark’s redemption for everything that happened last year in [the season eight finale] ‘Doomsday’. We really needed to put Clark through a journey to get to where he’s going to be. I think fans will be very happy.”

The CW’s “Smallville” has been renewed for another season but last week’s rating numbers faltered, only pulling 1.84 million viewers, a low for the show.

Watch “Smallville” on the CW, Fridays at 8/7C.
