Earlier this month, we brought you the news about director Roland Emmerich (Anonymous) being courted by Universal Pictures to helm the big-screen adaptation of the old school video game, Asteroids. I guess that project may have to wait, because Emmerich seems to be planning a different trip to space.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights to Roland Emmerich‘s next project sci-fi project, entitled Singularity and the studio has also scheduled a May 17th, 2013 release date for the film. Other than the fact that it’s a Sci-Fi film, no other details about the project have been released.

Singularity is slated to hit theaters on May 17th, 2013.
