Director Guy Ritchie left the DC project “Sgt. Rock” for (ironically) another DC project, Lobo. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is attached to direct, and Chad St. John is writing the new script.
Joel Silver, who has been steering the project since it’s infancy, is teaming with Akiva Goldsman, who recently boarded as producer, to bring the project to the big screen via Warner Bros. The Reporter article claims that because WWII films don’t do big box-office, the film will instead be set in the future.
The film, which has been in development for almost 20 years Arnold Schwarzenegger was to star as Rock at one point.
Sgt. Frank Rock first appeared in Our Army at War #83 (June 1959), and was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert.
During World War II, Sgt. Rock fought in the infantry branch of the U.S. Army in the European Theatre and eventually rose to authority within his unit, Easy Company. The unit was made up of a disparate collection of individuals who managed to participate in every major action in the European war. Rock’s dogtag number was 409966, which had been, it was claimed, Robert Kanigher’s own military serial number.
