Sam Worthington Cast As DAN DARE: PILOT OF THE FUTURE

Sam Worthington has reportedly signed on to the Warner Bros. project based on the sci-fi comic series entitled, Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future. This project is said to be a major priority for Warner Bros., though there is neither a writer – nor director currently attached.

Dan Dare was created by illustrator Frank Hampson in 1950, and the character first appeared in Eagle comics’ Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, his stories were also dramatized on Radio Luxembourg from 1951-1956. The stories were set in the late 1990s but the dialogue and manner of the characters is reminiscent of British war films of the 1950s. Dan Dare is the most successful comic property in the history of the UK, and has been described as the British equivalent of Buck Rogers.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Comics bought the rights to the character two years ago, with the plan to relaunch the character first in the comics, where he brought Eisner Award Winning Comic Writer, Garth Ennis (Preacher) aboard to create a darker version of Dan Dare. Following the re-launch in Virgin Comics, the plan was then to create a film out of the property. While it seems that the project stalled out in their hands, now that Warner Bros. has picked up the project we’re likely to see more forward momentum.
