Late last month, we brought you the news about director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell) wanting to cast two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank (The Resident, New Year’s Eve) as one of the evil witches in the forthcoming Walt Disney Pictures film, Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Raimi was reportedly sparring with Disney who was against the idea and would rather have two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Blue Valentine) for the role instead.
Now, Deadline reports that Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz (Page Eight, Dream House) is currently in negotiations to star in the film as Evanorah, the Wicked Witch of the East and older sister of Mila Kunis‘ character, Theodorah, the Wicked Witch of the West. With Kunis already locked into the role of Theodorah, it was assumed that the role Raimi wanted Swank and Disney wanted Williams for was that of Evanorah, which has now been filled by Weisz, with the only other witch being (we assume) Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
We will have to wait and see if Swank and Williams were indeed up for the role of Evanorah and are now completely out of contention, or if they may have been up for the role of Glinda or another role entirely… stay tuned!
Oz: The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi and starring James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
