PROMETHEUS: Charlize Theron Joins The Cast; Michael Fassbender Says It Is Absolutely Connected To Alien

Last month, Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) joined the cast of Ridley Scott‘s forthcoming film called Prometheus, which evolved from the plans and script for what was to be one, or possibly two Alien prequel films. While the original prequel script was penned by Jon Spaihts, and later on Damon Lindelof was brought on board to work with Scott to rewrite the script.

In the process of their writing, Lindelof and Scott had apparently transformed the Untitled Alien Prequel into something of its own entity, as Scott put it – “it evolved into a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative.

Now, THR reports that Charlize Theron (Snow White and the Huntsman) is in final talks to join the cast of Prometheus, opposite Noomi Rapace (Untitled Sherlock Holmes Sequel) and Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class).

In other Prometheus news…

Ridley Scott had previously said that while Prometheus is not an Alien film,  “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak.”

Sky Movies then said that sources told them:

“Part of the film will be shot in Morocco. I’ve heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I’ve also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I’m not sure if it’s an archaeological dig on another planet.”

Speaking with MTV, Michael Fassbender stated that Prometheus is connected to Alien:

“Oh, absolutely. There’s a definite connecting vein, You realize you’re part of something else, but it’s definitely in keeping with the old ones. Although it explores other areas of that universe, it appears that “Prometheus” and “Alien” exist in the same space. For Fassbender, that connection was initially a bit overwhelming: “When I read it, I was like, ‘Well, okay, another Alien. Where do you go with this idea?’ And then I sort of read the script, and it’s new, yet it’s in keeping with the old traditions as well. But there’s a whole new revelation within this film.”

“The first ‘Alien’ [movies], they were thrillers, Something’s going on. It’s creeping, it’s sinister. Things are happening, it’s building, [and there are] different sorts of intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships on board.”

“There’s action in it, but the intelligence is what struck me when I read it. It’s more sort of like the original ones. There are things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action.”

Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron is slated to hit theaters on June 8, 2012.
