Oz: The Great and Powerful – Is Sam Raimi Fighting with Disney Over Hilary Swank?

Back in February, we told you that James Franco (127 Hours, Rise of the Apes) sign on to star as Oz in the Sam Raimi directed Oz: The Great and Powerful after Robert Downey Jr. had dropped out of the film, and Johnny Depp had passed on the role. Shortly thereafter, Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Friends with Benefits) signed on to play Theodorah, the Wicked Witch of the West in the film.

Now, NYMag reports that director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell) wants to cast two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank (The Resident, New Year’s Eve) as one of the evil witches but is reportedly sparring with Disney who is against the idea and wants two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Blue Valentine) for the role instead.

This wouldn’t be the first casting fight Raimi has had with a studio. Sony’s Columbia Pictures pushed for American Beauty star Wes Bentley to take on the role of Peter Parker in the Spider-Man films, and Raimi was the only one who pushed for Tobey Maguire.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
