Oz: The Great and Powerful – Michelle Williams Cast As Glinda

Back in February, we told you that James Franco (127 Hours, Rise of the Apes) sign on to star as Oz in the Sam Raimi directed Oz: The Great and Powerful after Robert Downey Jr. had dropped out of the film, and Johnny Depp had passed on the role. Shortly thereafter, Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Friends with Benefits) signed on to play Theodorah, the Wicked Witch of the West in the film.

Last month, director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell) was reportedly sparring with Disney over his desire to cast two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank (The Resident, New Year’s Eve) as one of the evil witches, when the studio preferred two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Blue Valentine) for the role instead. Just a couple of weeks ago, we told you that Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz (Page Eight, Dream House) was in negotiations to star in the film as Evanorah, the Wicked Witch of the East and older sister of Mila Kunis‘ character.

Now, the studio has apparently won the argument with Raimi over the one remaining witch role. Variety reports that Michelle Williams has in fact been cast as Glinda, the good witch.

When we brought you the Hilary Swank story originally, the role of Evanorah was still vacant and many had assumed Raimi wanted Swank for the remaining evil witch role. Knowing now that the battle was over Williams or Swank taking the role of Glinda, the good witch, I’ll have to side with the studio on this decision. I dig Hilary Swank but, Williams is much more suited for that role.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
