Original Spawn Al Simmons is to return as the antagonist in the upcoming special Image United.

Introduced by Todd McFarlane in 1992, ex-CIA agent Simmons took up the mantle of the hellspawn after being betrayed to his death by his former bosses. The character was killed off in the 2008 storyline ‘Endgame’ but will return to “destroy the Image universe” in November.

Image United will run for six issues, bringing together six of the seven founders of Image Comics for a special collaborative venture. Whilce Portacio, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri, Rob Liefeld, Erik Larsen and Todd McFarlane will work alongside Image newcomer Robert Kirkman on the project.

The crossover event will see Spawn do battle with the founders’ original creations, including Youngblood, Savage Dragon, Shadowhawk, Witchblade, Cyberforce and The Darkness.

Image United #1 (of 6) will be released in November.
