Once Upon a Time Wonderland Spinoff Gets Red Queen and a New and Better Title

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland Emma Rigby wide

Last week we got you up to speed on the available information for the Once Upon a Time Alice in Wonderland spinoff, which was then titled Once: Wonderland. Happily, that rather inartful title has been changed to the lovely and even-more-fairy-tale-ish Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

In addition, the part of the Red Queen has been cast, and please note: it’s the Red Queen, from Through the Looking Glass (yes, Losties, I know), not the Queen of Hearts, from Alice in Wonderland. Deadline reports that young Brit Emma Rigby (Ripper Street) will be playing the part. As we reported, she will be joining Sophie Lowe as Alice, Peter Gadiot as her mysterious love interest Cyrus, and Michael Socha as the Knave of Hearts.

The Red Queen is rather nasty in the book, but not everything or everyone is quite the same in Once Upon a Time as he or she is in the fairy tales, so only time will tell. It’s interesting that they’re pulling from both Carroll books for this four scene proposal; if the show gets picked up for series it could make for some interesting character interaction.

The shoot is scheduled to begin on April 7 in Vancouver, immediately after Once Upon a Time completes shooting its current second season. We’ll keep you posted.
