No Ordinary Family show co-creator Greg Berlanti says that the show’s focus is more on the family dynamic and action involved in Jim Powell’s secret crime-fighting than exploring the mythology behind these new found powers of the Powell family. For a show that has been described as a live-action The Incredibles, this ABC show is sure captivating viewers.
Berlanti explains how the show is shaping up:
“It’s more standalone [than we planned]. There’s not as much mythology as I thought we would be able to creep in, because… by the time you write the individual stories, the family story and whatever action storyline Michael Chiklis‘s character might be caught up in that week, there’s not as much time to do mythology. So we sorta deal with the mythology of the show every fourth or fifth episode.”
The question lingering in the air for this show is “Will this extraordinary family’s powers be revealed to the world?” Berlanti continues:
“He’s not busted yet, but we will deal with that in the series. [Jim] realizes after the second episode that [he] can’t just be hopping around from roof to roof during the daytime. So he starts hunting more at night and doing stuff trying to be more vigilante at night and that gets him in trouble. We ask ourselves every day, what would really happen if this person were in this situation? If we’re lucky enough to go five years, [the show would] be the five years that lead up to the comic book. It’s really nascent and very much the beginning and so a lot of mistakes will get made.
I think we’ll try to keep [the family] out of the press as much as possible, so that it’s building more and more that it’s this myth in this city. Is there really a guy out there that can do this? But that would be an endpoint. Again, whether it be the end of the first year that the city knows that there’s someone like this… We’ll try and slow that process down as much as possible because once you open that door, it’s hard to go back.”
According to actor, Michael Chiklis, ABC’s No Ordinary Family is a “family series at its core, wrapped in a crime show procedural.” Check out this vid for more:
