As we revel in the fairy tale trend, we’ve been following several projects based on the classic Grimm fairy tale, Snow White. Relativity’s yet untitled Snow White film and Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman are the most visible thus far, but what’s the difference between the two?
Writer Jason Keller, who wrote the script for Relativity’s untitled Snow White, talked about a marked difference in tone for the two takes in an interview with NYMag:
“Ours is not dark. I mean, I know Snow White and the Huntsman is very intense, and lots of chain mail, and armor, and Kristen Stewart has a sword. Ours is an adventure, ours is funny — it’s a comedic adventure! And there’s some great action in it. It’s stunningly gorgeous, and it’s fun … Ours will be PG or PG-13, and the other one will probably be a R. We don’t know yet. But ours is nothing like theirs.”
This is pretty much what we figured by the looks of the pics released this summer from both Relativity and Universal (seen above side by side with Relativity’s Lily Collins on the left and Universal’s Kristen Stewart on the right) and the synopses listed below, but it’s interesting to hear how funny Relativity’s aims to be.
Synopsis of Relativity’s untitled Snow White:
In Relativity’s Snow White, a spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale, an evil queen steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.
Cast includes Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts plays the Queen, Lily Collins (The Blind Side) plays Snow White, Armie Hammer (The Social Network) plays Prince Andrew Alcott, Robert Emms (Anonymous) plays Prince Alcott’s valet, Renbock, and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage) plays the Queen’s hapless and bungling servant, Brighton. The Seven Dwarfs are being played by Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants), Jordan Prentice (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Danny Woodburn (Watchmen), Sebastian Saraceno (Bedtime Stories), Ronald Lee Clark (Epic Movie), Martin Klebba (Pirates of the Caribbean series) and Joey Gnoffo (The Benchwarmers). The studio has also cast Mare Winningham (Brothers) as Baker Margaret and Michael Lerner (Elf) as Baron and most recently Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) as the King.
The as yet Untitled Snow White Project is slated to hit theaters on March 16th, 2012.
Synopsis of Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman:
The film is said to offer a different take on the classic fairy tale, having Snow White (Kristen Stewart) banished by the evil queen (Charlize Theron), and forming a bond with the man who was sent to kill her, The Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). The Huntsman instead becomes her mentor, teaching her how to fight and defend herself and she “learns the ways of a warrior in the woods.”
Snow White and the Huntsman also stars Ian McShane, Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Noah Huntley, and Liberty Ross.
Snow White and the Huntsman is slated to hit theaters on June 1st, 2012.
