Michael Bay Says the New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Will Have a New Origin

Just last week, we brought you the news when Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon and Platinum Dunes announced the 2013 release date for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, which is being directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles, Wrath of the Titans).

Now, despite the Ninja Turtles we all know and love being the product of mutation via radioactive ooze (that’s where the “Mutant” part comes in), Michael Bay, who’s company Platinum Dunes is heading up production the new TMNT film has let it slip that the new Turtles will have a different origin.

At Nickelodeon‘s annual upfront presentation last week, Bay revealed details for the forthcoming live-action/cgi hybrid movie, saying:

“When you see this movie, kids are going to believe one day these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie,” said Bay as he took the stage to discuss his new vision for the reptilian reboot. “These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.”

Because this has turned into something of a controversy, Michael Bay has commented on the fan outrage at the altering of the TMNT origin by saying,

“Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.

Michael”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is slated to hit theaters on December 25th, 2013.
