Matthew Vaughn Is Developing a Golden Age Superhero Movie

Director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) isn’t giving up on the superhero genre just yet. While no deals have been made yet, the director is shopping his next project titled The Golden Age around Hollywood and a major studio is reportedly interested in the project.

The Golden Age is based on an unpublished comic by British TV personality and comic book author Jonathan Ross (Husband of Vaughn’s frequent co-writer, Jane Goldman). The story follows a group of retired heroes in a retirement facility for superheroes past their prime, who try to help their grandchildren after their parents have turned the world into chaos.

Vaughn wants to have actors on board prior to the script being written and has some big names like Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty on his wish list.

“You have these great star names and they’re mainly playing supporting roles now. I want to give them the lead again and let them have some fun.”

Deadline reports that Jane Goldman may not co-write the script with Vaughn, and the director may only be producing the film, although there is a possibility he may direct the project as well.

For the uninitiated, The Golden Age also refers to The Golden Age of Comic Books which Wikipedia defines as –

A period in the history of American comic books, generally thought of as lasting from the late 1930s until the late 1940s or early 1950s. During this time, modern comic books were first published and enjoyed a surge of popularity; the archetype of the superhero was created and defined; and many of the most famous superheroes debuted, among them Superman, Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel.

The period saw the arrival of the comic book as a mainstream art form, and the defining of the medium’s artistic vocabulary and creative conventions by its first generation of writers, artists, and editors.
