Luke Goss Stars In DEATH RACE Prequel

Woah, the movie that made a vehicular homicide a sport is getting a prequel!  Universal’s direct-to-DVD prequel to the 2008 film, “Death Race”, is called “Death Race: Frankenstein Lives”.  This prequel will be directed by Roel Reiné and star Luke Goss (“Hellboy II”, “Blade II”).  Ironically, Goss will play Luke, the man that wore the ‘Frankenstein’ mask before Jason Statham’s character Jensen Ames.  Here’s a profile on Goss’ character Luke/’Frankenstein’ and the plot of the prequel:

“Luke, the right-hand man for a notorious mobster, is busted for killing a cop in the process of robbing a bank. Once behind the bars of Terminal Island, the confident newcomer is roped into entering the ‘big race’ by its green-eyed producer.”

In case you need a refresher, the man who wore the ‘Frankenstein’ mask was the popular inmate-competitor who was one win away from winning his freedom in the pay-per-view game of “Death Race”.  “Frank” was mortally injured and died before his last race and the warden/producer of the show set up Jensen Ames to fill in for “Frank”.  David Carradine made a cameo appearance in “Death Race” as Frank.

Deathrace: Frankenstein Lives” was penned by Tony Giglio and will start shooting in Africa this February.

How’s this for more irony?  Even though Goss is better known for his role as the elf Prince in “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”, he has played Frankenstein’s monster before in the Hallmark television mini-series, “Frankenstein” in 2004.

[Commentary]

You know what? I enjoyed “Death Race” as a splatterific romp of film-tastic GTA-sort of violence.  So I hope that this prequel will be just as fun.  Goss owned his performance as Prince Nuada in “HellBoy II” so I think he will have a lot of fun with this role.
