A live-action “Star Wars” series is still finding its way to the small screen. This untitled television series has been in the works for a few years now but word is that George Lucas and his team are aiming for a 2011 premiere. This new Star Wars show will be set “in between the last prequel and the first original, A New Hope, during the dark times Obi Wan mentioned to Luke in Episode IV”.
Lucas described the show as being more akin to the original series:
“. . . funny and there’s action, but it’s [a] lot more talky. It’s more of what I would call a soap opera with a bunch of personal dramas in it. It’s not really based on action-adventure films from the ’30s – it’s actually more based on film noir movies from the ’40s!”
More interestingly, Lucas also compared the show to be “like Deadwood meets The Sopranos, but in space”. It promises to be a darker and grittier feel with the Empire at its height, focusing on “minor” Star Wars characters. Such “minor” characters may include fan fave Boba Fett (Daniel Logan from “Attack of the Clones”), golden droid C-3PO, or Emperor Palpatine, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
The delay in production of this project is largely due to work on the animated series “Star Wars: Clone Wars” and pushed back during the writer’s strike. The new television series will be filmed in Australia and will be penned by TV writers, Tony McNamara and Fiona Seres.
The new show is conceived to run over a hundred episodes with Lucas on board in a producer capacity for the first year. Mark Hamill, though not involved with the project, weighs in:
“But one thing I think is a positive step in terms of it being a TV series is that they’re going to really have to rely on good scripts rather than making it some special effects extravaganza. So he [Lucas] kind of got caught up in making it bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger until you’re just exploding with special effects all over the screen like some fireworks display. And to me, I think it’s more important to make the audience care about the characters.”
What do you think will make a live-action Star Wars television series successful? Can Lucas make this happen for you?
