Judge Dredd: Karl Urban Is The Law

We told you back in May that the production company behind the new Judge Dredd big screen adaptation, Reliance BIG Pictures put out a press release stating that filming would take place this Fall and the film would be released in 2012. What they didn’t reveal at the time was who would be “The Law”.

Now, during a recent interview, Karl Urban (Star Trek, Red) was asked about recent rumors that he was in the running to play Judge Dredd in the new reboot. Urban said “Yeah, that’s correct, that’s a big rumor going on, I can’t say too much at this point but it’s lookin’ good.” The actor said he’s been a fan of Dredd since he was a teenager, and “started reading Dredd 25 years ago.

Urban added,

“[He is a] phenomenal iconic comic book character, so it’s a world I know and it would be a privilege and a pleasure to be able to bring that to life.”

Just a few days later, Urban spoke with New Zealand’s TV3 movie show Reel Late with Kate that he had officially been given the role, saying:

“Yes, it’s true, I am the Law”. He added that he was “thrilled to bits” about landing the role.

Judge Dredd is slated to hit theaters in 2012.
