Johnny Depp, Please Bite Me! Depp in ‘Dark Shadows’

johnnydepp-comiccon09Bite me in a good way, I mean!

Tim Burton confirms at San Diego Comic-Con that his next project will be re-imagining ABC’s “Dark Shadows”.  It is rumored that Johnny Depp‘s production company, Infinitum-Nihil, owns the rights to the vampire soap.  Depp will play the vampire, Barnabas Collins.

Burton talks about adapting the TV soap into a movie:

“It’s another challenge because it was such a weird soap opera.  Part of the energy of it was the tone and weirdness of it. That’s our challenge, to try to capture that vibe.”

What kind of vibe will that be and how will Burton put his signature style on the film?  Burton says:

“That remains to be seen. That’s a question and a challenge we talk about a lot. I haven’t arrived at the answer. That’s definitely a main issue, the tone and the vibe of it because as we all know melodrama can cross over. It’s one of the more interesting things about it.”

Depp is fiercely excited about playing Barnabas Collins in “Dark Shadows”:

“It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”

darkshadowsWe seems to be knee-deep in vampires right now with “Twilight” and “True Blood”.  How does Burton feel about this trend?

“It happens. You look at the history of film and whether it’s vampires or witches or wizards or whatever, it’s like any great fable or fairytale, it’s got a power to it. I think that’s why people keep going back to it. There’s something symbolic about it that touches people in different ways. It’s symbolic for something, I’m sure with everybody it’s slightly different but it’s still powerful. All great stories, there are about five different variations. I grew up on monster movies and it wasn’t until later that I realized it’s all the same story basically, but the monsters are great and they’re all different and it makes it feel like it’s all different. The monsters have more personality than the actors around them a lot of times.”

I cannot think of anything so wonderfully delicious as Johnny Depp as a vampire.  Why hasn’t this happened already?

Move over Edward, there’s a new vampire on the screen!
