Producer Joe Roth is no stranger to adapting fairy tales for Hollywood. In fact, one could say that he helped start with trend with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 2010 that grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. Roth is currently producing Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman and Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, but he’s not stopping there.
Deadline reports that Roth is in talks to be a producer on Disney’s Maleficent, a re-telling of the 1959 Sleeping Beauty told from the point of view of the wicked fairy godmother that cursed that infant Princess Aurora. Angelina Jolie is tentatively attached to star in the title role of the “Mistress of All Evil.”
As we reported to you this summer, the project is still looking for a director to helm the project since it did not work out with Tim Burton. The project did catch the eye of Oscar-winner David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings) who reported met with Jolie.
The script for Maleficent was written by Linda Woolverton who also wrote the screenplay for Alice in Wonderland. Sounds like Disney could be trying to recreate the success it had with Alice but without Burton in this particular equation. Will having Roth on board bring this project take Maleficent to box office success?
