I received an email the other day, pointing to a supposed piece of concept art, depicting the monster from J.J. Abrams upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller, Super 8. It does look pretty legitimate, with the Paramount Pictures logo, and the Bad Robot name at the bottom of the image. Of course, it could be for something else entirely, like the as yet Untitled Cloverfield Sequel, or even the Untitled Star Trek Sequel.
The image has reportedly come from IMDB user SS-Cotapaxi, who stated –
“So, my friends’s brother’s wife works for a company that does marketing for films, video games, music, etc. Occasionally she’ll get chain mails from these companies which aren’t supposed to go to them.A few days ago she received a chain mail intended for production staff within Paramount. One of the attachments was this – “
I’m including the image (way down) at the bottom of this article because I know that some of you love this stuff and live for spoilers but, I want to give everyone else a chance to click their back button and save the surprise for the film, if it is in fact the Super 8 monster.
I’m not sure how many of you have seen J.J. Abrams TEDTalk from 2007 where he speaks about “The Mystery Box”, it’s a great presentation (which I’ve embedded below) where he talks about unseen mysteries, and it’s precisely why I dig Abrams and Christopher Nolan‘s penchant for keeping tricks up their sleeves on their projects. Check it out… then, if you still want to see the monster image, keep scrolling down the page.
J.J. Abrams: The Mystery Box
Wait for it…
Almost there…
For the record: We don’t buy the whole “my friends’s brother’s wife” message that accompanied this image, and that alone is enough to say that it’s likely a fake. I will give the artist credit though, if it is a fake, it’s still some cool artwork.
[Update]
MovieViral.com reports that the image is not official concept art for Super 8 (or any other film), it’s actually concept artwork from Patrick Reilly on DeviantArt.
Patrick has some fantastic artwork, and he should be working for a studio (check out his gallery) but, when asked if the art was his, he told Unfiction via Super8News –
Yes, except for all the writing.
Where did you find that?
Thanks for the heads up.As for the Cloverfield art, that was just fan art based on the descriptions that some people had given.
A few days after I created it, I noticed several websites claiming it was official concept art.Anyways, Ill look into those websites claiming it’s Super 8 concept art.
J.J. Abrams‘ new, super-secret sci-fi thriller Super 8, starring Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard and Amanda Michalka hits theaters on June 10, 2011.
